Bon Secours Maryview Takes a Breath of Fresh Air
Portsmouth, Va. (November 20, 2008) – With more than one out of every five deaths in the United States linked to smoking, Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth and Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View in Suffolk have announced that both sites are officially tobacco free. Patients and staff will be asked to refrain from using any tobacco products on the grounds of the two health care facilities. Nicotine replacement therapy products will be available for sale at the Bon Secours Maryview out-patient pharmacy.
The facts:
- Smoking causes one out of every five deaths in the United States.
- Smoking kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, mother vehicle accidents, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined.
- Over 430,000 people die from their own cigarette smoking and between 38,000 and 67,500 people die from other people’s smoking.
- More than 6,000,000 youth under the age of 18 today will ultimately die from smoking.
